Pigs, cows and chickens power English village

The future of community energy is being pioneered near the small English village of Hatherop where a power station using biogas or 'digester gas' was recently commissioned. Powered by agricultural biomass, including chicken litter, cow dung and pig slurry, residents benefit from this low cost alternative to oil, coal and foreign gas. Hatherop is one of the first villages in the United Kingdom to benefit from power derived from chicken litter,... [more]

Much Light, Little Heat Efficiency
Energy efficiency in the U.S. is much light and little heat — literally.  Government policy pays a great deal of attention to saving electricity, but focuses little on the thermal energy we waste. “Policy is electricity-centric in the U.S. Unless you are making kilowatts, the most efficient investments are off the radar,” sa

Biomass discussion to fuel Science Cafe
File Photo by Grant Morris An example of large-scale conversion to wood heat can be seen at Mascenic High School in New Ipswich.

Science Cafe on Wednesday: Is burning wood for energy really a good idea?
Burning wood to keep warm is so 19th century. That’s why it has a much more interesting name for the 21st century. “We are tailor-made for an increase in biomass thermal,” said Scott Nichols, head of a Lyme company called Tarm USA that has been selling wood-burning stoves and boilers since the oil shock of the 1970s. That’s “biomass” as in a mass of biological stuff and “thermal” as in heat.
