Evergreen Solar and MMWEC to advance solar power opportunities for customers of Massachusetts municipal utilities
Evergreen Solar, Inc. has announced that it is working with the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC) to advance solar power opportunities for customers of Massachusetts municipal utilities. Evergreen Solar and MMWEC are working together to install pilot PV systems on schools, municipal buildings and other high-profile sites in communities served by municipal utilities.
These installations will serve to promote renewable energy and serve as a visual statement of MMWECs commitment to solar power in conjunction with the Governor’s “Commonwealth Solar” program. Evergreen Solar is a manufacturer of solar power products including its String Ribbon™ wafer technology.
Additionally, MMWEC plans to work with Evergreen Solar to develop a municipal program that will provide incentives for customers who live in municipal utility communities to purchase solar systems for both residential and commercial installations.
“We are pleased to be working with MMWEC to generate awareness of solar power in these communities along with educating the public on the benefits of this renewable energy source,” said Richard M. Feldt chairman, president and CEO of Evergreen Solar. “This program in conjunction with Governor Patrick’s Commonwealth Solar initiative should go a long way in accelerating the adoption of solar in the Commonwealth.”
“MMWEC is excited about working with Evergreen on the installation of demonstration projects in the short-term and in developing a broader involvement in the promotion and installation of solar projects in municipal electric systems,” said MMWEC President H. Bradford White. “This is the kind of initiative needed to make solar power and other renewable energy resources an integral part of our power supply.”
