Spire Corporation's wholly owned subsidiary, Spire Semiconductor, LLC has been awarded a contract from the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) to develop high efficiency, multi-junction solar cells for space applications.

Solar power investment in North America and Europe was hit by the financial crisis, leading the industry to hope for Asia to boost its spending on this form of renewable energy.
The Asian Development Bank launched a $9 billion solar power initiative to develop projects generating 3,000 megawatts by 2012. Matinee Energy, Inc. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding and formed a strategic alliance with Hyundai Heavy Industries Company Ltd. (Hyundai) and LG Electronics, Inc. (LG). McCormick & Company, Inc. and Constellation Energy have announced an agreement to develop a new 1.8-megawatt (DC) solar photovoltaic power system at the McCormick Distribution Center in Belcamp, Md. This will be the largest single rooftop solar installation in Maryland, and is the second solar installation developed for McCormick by Constellation Energy.
